2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review

2022 Panini Prizm WWE has taken the hobby by storm. But the prices are incredibly high, at well over $1,000 a box. So, is it a buy at those prices? Read our 2022 Panini Prizm WWE review to find out.

Intro To The 2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review

Look for a 2022 Panini Prizm WWE hobby box on eBay.

Panini has not had many wins lately. Losing the NBA and NFL has been devastating for their business profile. The NBA, in particular, is the center of its operation in the United States. Moreover, the Italian company suffered further setbacks when losing the rights to the Euro 2024 and 2028 soccer competitions.

However, one bright spot in the Panini skies is their outlook on wrestling cards. The company beat out Topps to obtain the WWE rights for 2022 and beyond. The deal represents a net loss for Topps, which has held the rights to WWE since 2005. Fleer and Comic Images had held the license in the past.

The timing has been nothing short of excellent. After taking some lumps from UFC in recent years, the more old-school wrestling brand has enjoyed something of a comeback over the last few months.

For years, Topps had a monopoly on WWE cards. Look for more Alexa Bliss autos on eBay.

A Bit About WWE Cards

Wrestling cards are not among the biggest traditional releases, but there is a substantial market for them. They also enjoy a long and rich tradition. Wrestling cards first appeared in the original Allen & Ginter releases of the late 19th Century.

For example, the Blowout Cards forum has an entire section for wrestling, and card stores quickly offload their supply of WWE. The brand is viewed in over 30 countries and has around 11 million regular viewers domestically. As a result of the popularity of the wrestling releases, you can now find boxes regularly on the shelves of large retailers and local card stores. Therefore, the brand has a lot of room for growth.

Panini Prizm WWE

2022 Panini Prizm WWE is the inaugural product for the new license. Though Prizm is a new product in the WWE space, it will not be unfamiliar to enthusiasts. WWE Topps Chrome and WWE Topps Finest have provided similar cards in the past.

The combination of the veteran wrestling brand and the established Prizm format seems like a natural winner. Panini CEO Mark Warsop said, “We have always been intrigued by WWE as a license partner and their fans’ incredible passion. We have big plans for our WWE portfolio and the new heights we can help WWE trading cards and stickers reach in the collectibles arena.”

The popularity of the release is already highly evident in the high value of the box. It is also a particular favorite for breakers, showing they can make a nice profit from WWE breaks.

2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review Of The Pros

One great advantage of this product is its status as the first Panini WWE release. Even if other Panini releases are forthcoming, which looks pretty likely, Prizm will likely stand as the flagship. So, this release has a good chance of becoming the first in a very successful series.

The checklist is also proving quite popular. Wrestling fans criticized Topps for recycling inserts and autos. Meanwhile, Panini updated the checklist to include autos from the most sought-after stars while retaining beloved legends. In particular, Topps always seemed to be a few months behind on their included wrestlers. But the Prizm release includes several who debuted recently, including Wendy Choo and Tiffany Stratton.

The dual autos are particularly cool. For example, the Iconic Rivals Dual Autographs have autos from wrestlers with a long history of animosities, such as John Cena and Randy Orton or Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels.

The Iconic Rivals Dual Autographs are probably the most sought-after cards in this release. Look for more on eBay.

2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review Of The Cons

The price is far higher than wrestling collectors are used to. Before the boxes came out, users on Blowout Forums expected a $400-700 release price. So when the first presales were launched at $700, collectors were not surprised. However, they were still quite unhappy. One forum user said, “anyone paying $700 for this product is certifiably insane.”

But soon, the prices rose significantly. Anyone who bought a box for $700 was lucky because now they are going for well over $1,000. Meanwhile, the FOTL release came out at $2,000.

Another downside is the instability of Panini. While Prizm is a big name and should get collectors excited, the brand’s luster is lower than it has been in years. In addition, many wrestling collectors are concerned that the rights will end up with Fanatics in the long term. That would undermine the long-term value of the Prizm release.

2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review Of The Checklist

The checklist is relatively small, with a 200-base card set. The list has a nice mix of up-and-comers, veterans, and retired legends. The list is divided into vertical and horizontal cards.

The most notable “rookies” appearing in this release include Carmelo Hayes, Gable Stevenson, and Bron Breakker.

Bron Breakker is probably the hottest rookie in this set. Check out his cards on eBay.

2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review Of Inserts

One of the most significant advantages of a Panini release is the popular inserts that come with the territory. Unfortunately, as of now, there are no Downtown or Kaboom! inserts in WWE. However, with the loss of basketball and football, I believe it is just a matter of time.

2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review Of Parallels

As always with Prizm, parallels are the name of the game. And I think it’s fair to say that Panini has done better with these than Topps did with its equivalents.

2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review Of Value

There is a consensus on this brand that buying boxes are a fool’s errand. However, people are still buying these boxes, so they must see value in doing so. So, let’s dive in and see what the real story is.

Wax

As this is the inaugural release of WWE Prizm, we cannot compare the wax to previous years. Nonetheless, this is not the first WWE release, and there are Topps equivalents from recent years. Therefore, looking into the value of these releases is worthwhile for our purposes.

2021 Topps Chrome WWE Hobby Box $250
2021 Topps Finest WWE Hobby Box $150
2020 Topps Chrome WWE Hobby Box $600
2020 Topps Finest WWE Hobby Box $220

It’s really hard to gauge the future value of these cards. None of the Topps Chrome releases are worth as much as the Prizm ones are. But Prizm has a certain prestige that Topps Chrome has lost over the years. Still, you have to wonder if Prizm will retain that prestige in 10 years? That is possible, but I wouldn’t bet the massive prices these boxes are going for on that eventuality.

Will the WWE Topps Chrome hobby boxes increase in value over time? Check them out on eBay.

Singles

With boxes going for incredibly high prices, the singles must be valuable to justify buying wax. But are they worth enough? Unfortunately, this release is inaugural and very new. Therefore, we do not have much comparative data. Still, let’s look at some of the numbers we do have. Of course, all of these cards are raw since the release is brand new.

Ultimate Warrior Black Prizm 1/1 $15,000
Gable Steveson Gold /10 $14,000
John Cena Colorblast $11,200
Undertaker Auto Gold 10/10 $9,800
Shawn Michaels and Triple H Iconic Rivals $1,550
Carmelo Hayes FOTL Exclusive Gold 1/3 Shimmer $463

If prices keep, the singles seem to justify the high cost of wax. Not in the sense that you will definitely recover the price of entry. As in most cases, you probably won’t. But these cards do come closer than the average rip of a Flawless box.

Bottomline Of The 2022 Panini Prizm WWE Review

As it stands, the 2022 WWE Prizm set seems like a good and worthwhile product. It is aesthetically pleasing, and the fans love it. However, you need to ask yourself whether the value will keep itself high in the long run.

The card value may be inflated because it is a fresh product. So singles are likely to deflate eventually. Perhaps even quite steeply. The other problem is the future of Panini. A few months ago, Panini America was king of the hobby.

But with Fanatics in the game, the picture has changed completely. Fanatics is worth $27 billion, while Panini is valued at $3 billion. So if wrestling cards continue to grow, is Prizm WWE going to be a long-lived product and gain value? We wouldn’t bet on it.
