Disney Lorcana was officially announced at the D23 Expo on September 9th and set for release in the second half of 2023. Lorcana will be a trading card game similar to Magic: The Gathering or the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
With hype increasing about the product, here’s everything we know about Disney’s foray into the TCG genre.
Disney Lorcana is an upcoming trading card game designed and published by Ravensburger. Ravensburger is well known for designing the Disney Villainous board game, however this is their first attempt at creating a TCG. They made it clear that the game will be approachable for new players but still intricate for veterans of the genre.
Lorcana will have four expansion sets released each year, similar to other trading card games. The initial set, The First Chapter, will release in Fall 2023.
Disney Lorcana will have game play extremely similar to Magic: The Gathering. Players will have to build a deck of cards with the goal of beating your opponents deck. Cards have various mechanics and stats, and decks are typically built about a specific playing style.
We will know more about game play and specific mechanics once we get closer to the initial release.
Thanks to the special edition cards, we know what the aesthetic of The First Chapter will look like. Each card will heavily feature original art of classic Disney characters. Additionally, cards include the cost to use the card in the top left and the combat values on the middle-right of the card.
The bottom half of each card includes the character name, archetypes, special mechanics, and some flavor text. In the bottom left you can see the illustrator of the card design.
These cards are definitely nice pieces of eye candy, which will no doubt make them desirable for collectors. According to John Balen, the Vice President of Product Design at Disney, Lorcana will “contain more original Disney artwork than any single product ever created.” This demonstrates a clear commitment to creating an aesthetically pleasing card, which is great news for any collector.
So far, Disney has released only seven cards from The First Chapter. These cards were available exclusively to those attending the D23 Expo for $49.95. Similar cards will be available once The First Chapter releases, however the cards at the Expo had a foil finish and a unique D23 symbol at the bottom.
According to Ravensburger, the focus for the first expansion pack will be on classic Disney characters. This means nothing from Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars franchises, yet.
The only confirmed characters right now are Stitch, Elsa, Cruella de Vil, Maleficent, Robin Hood, Captain Hook, and Mickey Mouse. Judging from that list, it’s safe to assume related characters like Lilo, Anna, Peter Pan, and Tinker Bell make appearances in the set. If the details below the character names are any indication, there will be multiple card types of each character.
Collectors interested in started early with their Disney Lorcana collection face an uphill battle if they weren’t at the D23 Expo. These cards are going for a pretty penny on eBay, with Mickey Mouse selling for $250. Completing the rest of the set won’t be easy either, with a set of the other six first edition cards going for $2200.
Disney Lorcana promises to bring some variety to the trading card game market, appealing to fans of both Disney products and TCG veterans. A simplified version of Magic: The Gathering with the appeal of Disney could be a great way to get more casual gamers into the TCG space.
Throughout the next year we can expect to get more vital information about The First Chapter, like who exactly is included, the release formats, and an exact release date. Of course, stay tuned to this space for full information.
