Allen and Ginter harkens back to some of the very first baseball cards, the 1887/1888 Allen & Ginter Tobacco cards. The 2022 Topps Allen and Ginter product pays homage to the original, but with a modern flair.
If you like your cards ultra-glossy, ultra-serious, and totally on-point, this may not be the set for you. But if you like your cards a bit more old school, with some fun subject matter and a few puns, Allen & Ginter may be a dream break for you.
Let’s take a look at this popular yearly release with classic designs.
The release of 2022 Topps Allen & Ginter is scheduled for November 16, 2022.
The release format for 2022 Topps Allen & Ginter is:
Each hobby box contains 3 hits, which include on-card autographs, relics, original A&G buybacks, book cards, cut signatures, and RIP cards.
Each box also contains one box topper (see below for more details). Every Allen & Ginter pack contains one mini card.
Retail blasters are likely to also be available, although no details are yet available.
2022 Topps Allen & Ginter hobby boxes are currently pre-selling for around $120.
Topps Allen and Ginter stays true to its modern history, as a homage to the original tobacco cards. That includes the fact that the checklist is a mix of current players, former stars, players from other sports, and celebrities.
Some of the “celebrities” are always amusing, as they do tend to stretch the definition of that term at times. The set also tends to include places and intimate objects, something you won’t find in other products.
Again, this is all done in homage to the original set, which included “champions” in a variety of endeavors, from rifle shooting, billiards, wrestling, and oarsmanship. The original also included Indian Chiefs, stage actresses, fish, birds, and more.
The 2022 Topps Allen and Ginter base set consists of 300 cards. There is also 50 Short Print (SP) cards, which is numbered 301-350.
Base set parallels include Silver Portrait Parallel (hot boxes only) and 1/1 Glossy Parallels.
As we mentioned above, each pack of Topps 2022 Allen and Ginter includes a mini parallel. The mini set and the parallels mirror the base set in both design and the checklist.
The mini card and their various parallels are always a fun chase and pay homage to the small size of the original Allen & Ginter cards from the 19th century.
Note that the printing plates are mini-sized but come in a “frame” that is the size of a base card.
A 150 subset of the base checklist also gets a number of additional mini parallels, which include:
The 2022 Topps Allen & Ginter product goes beyond the norm with box toppers, which come in one per hobby box.
Allen & Ginter Boxloaders and N43 Boxloaders feature baseball players. These also have tough autographed versions that are limited to only 15 copies each.
Inside the Park Boxloaders take mini cards and make them jumbo sized. These are limited to 500 copies each.
Boxloader Rip Cards are also available in some hobby boxes, which each contain three mini cards. Randomly inserted are exclusive 1/1 Stained Glass Mini variations.
The insert offerings are where Allen & Ginter really lets its freak flag fly. They’re a lot of fun, with some really unique subjects.
Some insert sets are full-size cards, while others are in the mini format.
This insert features top pitchers, with their birthstones in the background. This is a full-sized insert.
This full-size insert celebrates award and championship-winning players.
This full-sized insert features two players who are well-known adversaries or rivals.
Celebrating notable days, this full-sized insert should be a lot of fun.
Each card features one ingredient. Collect the entire set to get the full recipe. These are full-sized cards.
This full-sized insert set celebrating “sandwiches and meat/bread combos”. Yes, you read that right. This should be something!
This mini-sized insert showcases different kinds of ducks, and perhaps a goose.
Mini-sized insert that should provide full-sized fun. This offering features “real-life” versions of baseball sayings/terminology. The dad joke-teller in me is really looking forward to this one.
Mini-sized insert that highlights “crazy items people have tried to steal throughout history.”
Celebrating odd times Major League Baseball games were canceled or paused.
This mini-sized set celebrates some of the biggest parks out there, US National Parks.
Celebrates exotic fruits from around the world. This insert set is a bite-sized mini offering.
We get some really interesting relic offerings in 2022 Topps Allen and Ginter, as well. They range from gems to fossils to, well, baseball cards.
Mini-sized cards that include a relic and are encased in a frame.
With two different designs, the full-sized relic offering brings memorabilia to the full-sized form factor. This is the place where fans will find relics of some of the entertainment and pop culture subjects.
This particular insert has an obvious path to a relic version, and Allen & Ginter took it. These include actual birthstone gems.
These hobby-exclusive relics are numbered to 25 copies each. Oh, and also, they’re fossils. So, if you’re say a crazy scientist looking to bring prehistoric animals back to life, this is the relic for you!
These are cool. The “relic” is an original Allen & Ginter tobacco card, framed in a modern card. Each card is a 1/1.
Autographs are always a big draw in any modern product, and Allen & Ginter is no different.
The biggest autograph offering in 2022 Topps Allen & Ginter is the Framed Mini Autographs. They’re mini. They have on-card autographs. They’ll be a fun hit.
Black Frame (/25) and Red Ink (1/1, hobby only) parallels are also available.
Numbered to only 10 copies each, these book cards open to reveal either one or two relics and autographs.
These are all 1/1’s and the 20-card checklist includes MLB players, world championship athletes, and personalities.
Seeded a tough two per 12-box hobby case, Rip Cards offer another interesting hit, and a bit of risk…to rip or not?
Rip cards include one (or more) mini cards inside. Do you rip the outer card to get at a potentially exciting inner card, or keep the whole thing intact?
Standard Allen & Ginter Rip Cards features a 100-card checklist and a single mini card inside.
Allen & Ginter Dual Rip Cards cut the checklist to 50, but feature two players and two mini-cards inside.
As mentioned above, Box Topper Rip Cards are another possible hit.
Rip Cards can contain:
Allen & Ginter isn’t a high-end product, but how does the cost of 2022 Allen & Ginter compare to the price prior hobby boxes are selling for?
|Set||Hobby Box Price|
What does that mean for hobby box value? 2022 Topps Allen & Ginter hobby boxes are likely to hold their value, maybe even appreciate a bit. The upside is unlikely to be huge, but it beats the alternative.
Where Ginter isn’t a product that’s very rookie focused, it’s unlikely to have the year-to-year fluctuations of a product like Bowman may exhibit. People collect Allen & Ginter for all the unique stuff that it brings to the table.
2022 Allen and Ginter is a reasonably priced product that promises some hits and lots of fun. If you’re not into celebrities, ducks, national parks, and sandwiches on your cards, this might not be the set for you. But if you’re looking for a break that’s light on chrome but heavy on fun, this looks like a great option.
